Driven by multiple Sustainable Development Goals is the provision of water and wastewater services to remote indigenous communities. This session will include case studies around the challenges in providing access to services as well as leading examples in building skills within these remote communities.

The discussion paper published by The University of Queensland last year presents a scan of the current status of water, sanitation and hygiene services and challenges in remote Australian indigenous communities.

Case studies from Water Corporation and Cairns Regional Council will showcase the work being done in their areas of operation and cover the learnings and actions being taken to achieve positive outcomes.  Water Corporation’s current Reconciliation Action Plan is its fourth and is refreshed every three years with new priorities. The Cairns – Yarrabah Memorandum of Understanding was signed last year and aims to better understand culture and improve relationships with community influencers.

Brad Milligan from Queensland Health and Mark David from Torres Strait Island Regional Council will outline the recent pilot project intended to build the capacity of Indigenous drinking water operators and address drinking water public health concerns.

Concluding remarks will be given by Louise Dudley.
