Trade Waste Guideline Values for Water Utilities
Format Type: PDF
Publication Date: 08/2024
We are pleased to announce that WSAA has released an updated version of its Australian Wastewater Quality Management Guidelines today. The only change to the guideline is the inclusion of an addendum which specifically covers Trade Waste Guidance Values for Water Utilities.
Background:
In 2022, WSAA revised the Australian Wastewater Quality Management Guidelines (AWWQM), focusing on aligning with the evolving strategies of water utilities. This approach aims to effectively manage wastewater quality, ensure public safety, and achieve treatment outcomes, while accommodating the diverse needs of organisations, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies.
Due to the large scope of the guideline review, the appendix relating to trade waste guideline values was removed and set aside for a future update post the completion of the new guideline. WSAA conducted a Trade Waste Guidance Values Survey in 2023 to develop standalone Trade Waste Guidance Values covering updated Acceptance Criteria and information previously provided in Appendix C of the AWWQM Guidelines. This document is now complete, prepared through the collaborative efforts of various water utilities, drawing on insights and data from several case studies across different regions.
Objectives:
Trade Waste Guidance Values document outlines a structured approach for utilities to assess and manage trade wastewater inputs, emphasising the need for tailored guidance values that reflect local conditions and capabilities. Key outcomes include:
1. Establishment of Guidance Values: The document provides a basis for setting trade waste acceptance standards based on typical domestic sewage quality, while also accommodating the variability and complexity of trade waste discharges.
2. Hierarchical Management Approach: It advocates for a hierarchical framework that prioritises understanding wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) capabilities, influent specifications, and specific guidance values. This method allows for customised management strategies that consider the unique characteristics of each wastewater catchment.
3. Emphasis on Collaboration: Recognising the need for cooperative approaches, the document encourages utilities to engage with stakeholders, including industry representatives and regulatory bodies, to develop effective trade waste management strategies.
4. Adaptability to Emerging Challenges: The guidance is designed to be a "living document," adaptable to new information, treatment technologies, and emerging contaminants, ensuring that trade waste management practices remain relevant and effective.
5. Support for Regulatory Compliance: The framework aids utilities in meeting environmental licensing requirements, thereby enhancing compliance with state and federal regulations.
By providing a structured methodology for defining trade waste acceptance standards, this document aims to improve the overall quality and sustainability of wastewater management across Australia, ensuring that trade waste inputs are managed in a way that protects public health, infrastructure, and the environment.
