Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) has partnered with the Australia New Zealand Biochar Industry Group (ANZBIG) which has led the development of a proposed Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) method for biochar production.

Over the past few months, WSAA and our members have collaborated with ANZBIG and over 25 organisations to draft and submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the Biochar ACCU method under the proponent-led process.

This proposed method aims to harness the potential of biochar as a high-integrity greenhouse gas removal solution. Biochar, produced from biomass including biosolids, through pyrolysis, can sequester carbon in soils for hundreds of years, making it a crucial tool in Australia’s carbon abatement strategy. WSAA's involvement underscores the commitment by the water sector to advance innovative solutions that contribute to the circular economy, while also supporting broader environmental and climate goals.

WSAA and Irrigation Australia Unite for a Sustainable Future

The Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) is proud to collaborate with Irrigation Australia at the 9th Asian Regional Conference on Irrigation and Drainage. This partnership aims to foster sustainable water management practices across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. Together, WSAA and Irrigation Australia are working to address critical water challenges, ensuring that the latest advancements in irrigation and water technology are shared and implemented effectively. This collaboration highlights the commitment of both organisations to enhancing water security and resilience, aligning with global goals for sustainable development and climate change adaptation.

At the Conference, WSAA and Irrigation Australia will host a workshop to discuss issues of water availability for irrigation, and how good design can deliver the blue and green systems we need for thriving communities. This includes maximising reuse opportunities, with Sydney Water sharing their experience.
