Earlier this month, the WSAA Wastewater Source Management Workshop held in Launceston, Tasmania, brought together professionals from the Australian and New Zealand water sector.

The event facilitated collaboration and knowledge-sharing on critical wastewater source management issues, under themes such as current business frameworks, continuous improvement, emerging contaminants, and operational challenges. Chaired by Caleb Furner from Sydney Water and co-chaired by Colin Hester from qldwater, the workshop saw active participation from steering group members from Lalji Bhalsod of Greater Western Water, Merle Smuts from Watercare (New Zealand), Michael Sinclair of North East Water, WSAA Network Coordinator Hadis Zare and 29 professionals representing 20 water utilities.

TasWater kicked off the workshop with a presentation on their services and the introduction of a modern Trade Waste Contract, which led to  discussions on current challenges and focus areas. Highlights from day one included updates on the Trade Waste Guideline Value document and presentations from Icon Water and Watercare, which addressed compliance sampling, tariff reviews, and business activities. The day culminated with a networking dinner, enjoyed by all.

Day two delved into emerging contaminants and operational challenges. The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water's presentation on microplastics, supported by Greater Western Water, was particularly impactful. Sessions on PFAS, antibiotics as emerging contaminants, and operational issues like managing high ammonia concentrations in tip leachate discharge were thoroughly engaging. The day wrapped up with a workshop addressing critical areas such as cost benchmarking and pretreatment performance.

The final day featured a site visit to the Ti Tree Bend Sewer Treatment Plant, the Margaret Street pump station, and the Langford Sewerage Treatment Plant. Witnessing TasWater's innovative consolidation efforts and the pioneering Aerobic Nereda technology in action was an inspiring conclusion to the workshop.
